When to Book Family Photos in Portland, Oregon

One of the most common questions I get as a Portland family photographer is: how far in advance should we book?

Short answer: a few months ahead is usually best, especially for spring and fall.

Here’s what to know about each season in the Portland area:

  • Spring family photos in Portland: soft greens, blooming trees, and yes… some unpredictable weather

  • Summer sessions: warm, golden light and later evenings

  • Fall family photos: rich tones, cozy layers, and the busiest booking season with unpredictable weather as well

  • Winter sessions: slower, moodier, and beautifully simple

How to Choose the Best Location for Your Portland Family Photo Session

Choosing a location can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

As your photographer, I help you find a spot that fits your family and has the best lighting—not just what looks good online. You can also be as involved or hands-off as you like—pick the spot yourself, or describe what you’re going for and I’ll pick for you. Whatever makes it easier on you.

Some popular family photo locations in Portland and Vancouver, WA include:

  • Open fields for space and movement like Powell Butte Nature Park or Cathedral Park

  • Forest settings for a cozy, Pacific Northwest feel like Heritage Park or Hoyt Arboretum

  • River or beach locations along the Columbia for variety and texture like Rooster Rock State Park or Sandy River Delta

  • In-home sessions for a more personal, relaxed experience

If your kids love to run, we’ll choose somewhere that lets them explore. If you want something calm and simple, we’ll go that direction instead. I also have a whole list of locations with examples in my Welcome Packet that you’ll get after booking a session. If you have a spot in mind that’s not in the Welcome Packet absolutely let me know! I’ll check it out and determine if it has good lighting (because lighting is KING).

My ultimate advice is to pick something that you naturally gravitate to or a location that means something to your family. You could also think about what colors your like to see up in your home. I personally gravitate towards green meadows so I will be doing some variation of that forever and always because I just love it.

You don’t need to have the “perfect spot” picked out ahead of time—I help you through the whole thing. And remember, it’s more about the moments we’ll capture than the backdrop we’ll capture them in.

What to Wear for Family Photos (Without Overthinking It)

If you’re like me (or most of my clients), this is one of the biggest stressors of family photos. How can I plan out 3, 4, 5, 6+ outfits that coordinate, but don’t match, have a good color scheme, is flattering to everyone involved, and is something my kids won’t complain and/or cry about wearing?

I have soooo many tips for this! You can go about this a couple of different ways:
1. Choose an article of clothing with a pattern and use that as your color scheme and build your outfits around that.
2. Choose mom’s outfit first (whether that’s a pattern or not) and go from there. We want mom showing up confident in what she’s wearing-this is the best way to do it.

Besides that a few easy guidelines are:

  • When in doubt, stick to neutrals and earthy tones

  • Mix in texture like knits, linen, or layers

  • Avoid large logos, super bold patterns, extremely bright colored fabric right by your face, and small stripes or plaid because it photographs wavy

  • Choose pieces you can actually move and sit in and feel comfortable in—nothing takes you out of the moment quicker than wondering if something needs to be adjusted.

  • Pick 2-3 main colors, add in pops of a different color

  • Mixing patterns is absolutely doable—just alter the size of your patterns.

And most importantly: you don’t need to buy all new clothes. Use what you have in your closet, shop at thrift stores, or use it as an excuse to get yourself a new outfit. You do you. I go way more into detail on what to wear in this post, and I have my favorite color combos for family photos in this post.

P.S.-All of my full session clients get a free wardrobe consultation with yours truly so you can come to the session not wondering if what you picked is actually going to look good or not. I absolutely LOVE to help my clients out this way!

What a Portland Family Photo Session Actually Feels Like

Are you dreading photos because you think it’ll be an hour of standing still and smiling at the camera? I don’t blame you, but family photography sessions with me feel a lot different than that.

A lifestyle family photo session is much more relaxed and movement-based with plenty of prompts and games to get you interacting naturally.

It usually looks like:

  • Walking together

  • Playing with your kids

  • Snuggling, talking, laughing

  • Letting moments unfold naturally

I guide you the whole time, so you’re never wondering what to do, but nothing feels forced. There have been SO many times where at the end of a session I hear a surprised, “That was fun!”

What If My Kids Don’t Cooperate During Family Photos?

This is the number one concern for almost every parent.

And here’s the truth: kids don’t need to “cooperate” in the traditional sense for beautiful photos to happen.

During your family photo session in Portland, your kids can:

  • Move around

  • Be silly

  • Take breaks

  • Warm up at their own pace

I expect real behavior, not perfect behavior.

Some of the most meaningful images come from moments that feel a little messy in real time. I also have three boys myself and have photographed soooo many families so I have literally seen it all. But just in case, here’s a blog post on tips to getting kids to behave, as well as a blog post on proof that they don’t need to be perfectly behaved.

How Long Does a Family Photo Session Take?

Most family photography sessions in Portland are designed to be in that sweet spot of enough time to get good photos but not too long where the kids are going nuts. For most families, this ends up being about an hour.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Before your session: we plan outfits, location, and timing

  • During: you show up, we keep things easy and natural

  • After: you receive a curated gallery of images

Simple, streamlined, and no unnecessary stress.

What Happens If It Rains on Photo Day in Portland?

A very valid question. While I love the rain for all the gorgeous green it gives us, it does make it harder to schedule photos at certain times of the year.

If it’s just cloudy or lightly misting, we can often still move forward. If it’s too overcast and there won’t be enough light then we’ll reschedule. If you schedule with me during a time where we know weather might be a problem, I also schedule a backup day just in case so that’s already in place and ready to go if needed. If the backup day is also a no-go then we can go from there.

What to Do With Your Family Photos After Your Session

Your family photos aren’t just for a quick post or a holiday card.

They become:

  • Printed albums you flip through years from now

  • Photos on your walls that your kids grow up seeing

  • A way to hold onto this season of life

The little things you think you’ll remember forever? These help make sure you actually do. And to help you get them off your computer and hopefully onto your walls, each of my full session clients gets a $75 print credit to use towards whatever you like. Because what’s the point of getting family photos done if you don’t use them right?
