How to Prepare for Your Family Session
Do you avoid scheduling family photos because you’re just not sure what to expect? Does thinking about all the prep just make you want to breathe into a paper bag? I totally get it! I know from experience how stressful it can be to schedule and get family photos done. I want each of my clients coming to their family photo session feeling awesome and ready to go, so here are some tips on how to prepare for a session with me!
1. Remember that it’s completely natural to feel a little awkward in front of the camera.
The only people that don’t feel awkward are the people that are in front of the camera all the time. Because I love photography and feel like it’s suuuper important we have regularly gotten family photos done over the years. I have felt awkward EVERY SINGLE TIME. I feel like the best way to deal with this is to just know you’ll probably feel like, accept it, and just put that feeling on the back burner. Acknowledge it, then move on. Also, you can totally put your trust in me-I’ve been doing this for awhile and I’ve figured out the best way to help my clients feel more natural is by giving prompts and guiding you into poses that help you focus on something besides my camera.
2. Get those outfits prepped!
Make sure you love what you and your spouse/family are wearing! The best way to get candid photos is to feel as comfortable as you can. If you’re wearing something super fashionable but it makes you feel like your belly’s sticking out or your butt looks big or your arms look weird, PICK SOMETHING ELSE. You’re going to feel so much better and more confident and that will translate well into some awesome photos. Plus, if you’re not worrying about what your clothing is doing, it enables you to be fully present and just enjoy the moment. And if you have super messy kids or a drooling baby? Wait until you get to your location before putting that final layer on, or bring a bib so that cute baby doesn’t ruin their perfect outfit you painstakingly picked out. 3. Bring Snacks, sippies, comfort items, and bribe if necessary
Alright look, I usually recommend to my clients that if it’s possible to not bring any bags. Because I’m trying to get those natural and candid moments, I’m often shooting even when we’re walking between spots. HOWEVER, you do and bring whatever you and/or your kids need to be happy at the session. I have carried three bags, a blanket, and my cameras all at one time before to make sure I can still get the shots I want. So whatever makes it easier for you, bring it. Just maybe consolidate it into one bag if possible, thanks in advance. And if all those things still doesn’t help and your kiddo is having a hard time, I usually have something small to thank them for being so awesome during the session (after asking if it’s ok with you, obvi). A lot of families also plan some sort of fun treat after the session is done. You do whatever you feel good with!
4. Be prepared to move, play with your kids (or spouse), and play games!
I like to try and get the truest impression of YOU and your family in our session together. A lot of times I’ll bring that out by playing games, prompting you in some sort of movement, or just playing with your kids or your spouse. It makes the session fun, and the end result is fantastic. So make sure you all wear clothes you’re comfortable moving in, and make sure your kids know there will only be a couple times that I want them to stay still! Besides that we just have a good time together.
5. DON’T STRESS
Your husband doesn’t feel like smiling? No worries. Your kids need a break? Let’s do it. Kids aren’t following my prompts? That’s great! They’re being them! YOU need a break? Let’s take five! Family pictures, portraits, and couple sessions do NOT need to be stressful. We’ll take our time, have some fun, and take breaks or do something different when we need to. Seriously. I got your back.
That’s it! The biggest thing is that you realize we’re not trying to be perfect-we’re trying to get real moments. That won’t and can’t happen if you’re constantly worried about something whether it’s the way your kid is acting or how you look. So come to the session knowing all your prep has been done beautifully, and that you’re in great hands. We got this!
