Whether you're hunting for the best playground, a peaceful picnic spot, or scenic walking trails, these five highly-rated parks are favorites for families around the city. As a family photographer in the Portland and Vancouver area, I've explored most of these gems and can vouch for their charm and accessibility.

1. Washington Park
This park is practically a city within the city! With the Oregon Zoo, Portland Japanese Garden, International Rose Test Garden, and Hoyt Arboretum (it’s huge!) all within its bounds, Washington Park is a treasure trove of activities. Families love the expansive playground, the quiet paths perfect for stroller walks, and plenty of spots to spread out for a picnic. It's also an ideal backdrop for a casual family photo session.

2. Pirate Park
Anybody else love a themed park? This pirate themed park will keep your kids running around while also encouraging imaginative play. The playground is surrounded by trees so there will be shade there somewhere during the day. There are also trails nearby so you can bring bikes and scooters and change things up a bit to get the most bang for your buck and keep your kids occupied longer.

3. Mount Tabor Park
Located on a dormant volcano (how cool is that?), Mount Tabor Park has a unique layout, with paved and unpaved trails, scenic views of downtown Portland, and grassy fields. There’s a playground and ducks near the reservoirs, and there’s something extra magical about golden hour light here combined with the gorgeous views. Just know that this is another big park, so if you’re looking for something specific you might want to consult maps first so you know where to go.
4. Peninsula Park
This was one of the first parks I checked out after I moved and I just fell in love. A FREE rose garden?! And I know sometimes when you hear free you might think it’s small or dingy-nope! Sprawling gardens with a gorgeous fountain in the center. Different types of roses with signs so you can learn about the different types, ugh it’s just magical. There’s also a little gazebo that’s so cute, and a playground that’s super fun. The park usually has it’s peak bloom in mid-June, but the blossoms last clear into late September or early October.

5. Gabriel Park
Gabriel Park is inclusive, welcoming, and built for fun. It features an accessible playground, in-ground trampoline, sports fields, and tons of open space. Whether your family loves soccer, skateboarding, or simply lounging in the sun, there's something for everyone here. Seriously, it’s huge-the first time we checked this park out I only saw the skate park and thought that was it, so just know there are multiple sections to this park. Bring snacks and plan to stay a while!
Planning Ahead? Here Are a Few Tips:
Pack sunscreen and snacks—always.
Early mornings or evenings offer the best light and fewer crowds.
Bring a change of clothes if there's water play involved.
Don’t forget your camera—or book a local photographer to capture the moment (hey, I know a good one!).
As a photographer who focuses on real, everyday moments, these parks are where magic happens. They're full of laughter, messes, connection, and the kind of joy that deserves to be remembered. If you're local or visiting, I hope this list helps you find a new favorite spot to make memories with your crew.
Thinking about a family photo session at one of these beautiful parks? I’d love to help you plan something relaxed, candid, and perfectly you. Reach out and let’s make it happen!
