When to Book Senior Photos in Portland, OR

If you're a senior (or the parent of one), you’ve probably realized that senior year has a sneaky way of filling up very quickly. Between school, sports, activities, graduation plans, college decisions, and approximately 47 other things, it can be easy to put senior photos on the list of “things we’ll figure out later.”

And then suddenly it’s October.

So when should you actually book your senior photos?

The short answer is: as early as you can, especially if you have a specific season or location in mind.

Portland and the Pacific Northwest give us some pretty spectacular options throughout the year, from spring blossoms to golden summer evenings to those very Portland moody fall days. Each season has its own look, and some of those windows are surprisingly short.

Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect throughout the year and when I recommend booking.

Quick Answer:

The best time to book the following:
Book Senior Spring Blossom Photos for late March-April
Book Wildflower Gorge Sessions for late April to May
Book PNW Green and Lush Senior Photos for late May to June
Book Summer Senior Photos in Late June to early September
Book Fall Senior Photos for October to early November

Reach out one to two months ahead of time to make sure you get the date you want! Fall is usually especially busy to reach out at least two months before then.

🌸 Spring Senior Photos in Portland

Best time to book: January–early March (for late March and April sessions)

There is just something magical about spring, amiright? I just love watching everything grow and reawaken, and the colors!

Cherry blossoms, magnolias, and other spring blooms can make gorgeous backdrops for senior photos, but they don't stick around forever. Depending on the weather, peak bloom can be a very short window, and it can shift from year to year.

Booking early gives us more flexibility to find the right date around your school schedule and adjust if Mother Nature decides to do her usual Pacific Northwest thing.

Spring is especially great if you want:

  • Soft, light-filled photos

  • Blossoms and pastel colors

  • A fresh, springy look

  • Something a little different from the typical fall senior photos

A lot of my seniors this year had a deadline to submit their photo for the yearbook by November, so you really need to be thinking ahead if you want spring blossoms in your yearbook photo.

Best time to book: March–early April (for April-May sessions)

If you're up for a little adventure, late April through May can be an incredible time for senior photos in the Columbia River Gorge.

Wildflowers, sweeping views, and those big Oregon landscapes make for senior photos that feel a little more adventurous and dramatic. These sessions do involve more driving and usually a short walk or hike, so they’re best for seniors who don't mind turning their photo session into a mini adventure.

The tricky part is that wildflower season is short and weather-dependent. Booking ahead gives us the best chance of planning around peak bloom.

These sessions are perfect if you want:

  • Big Oregon scenery

  • Wildflowers and vibrant colors

  • Something outdoorsy and adventurous

  • Senior photos that feel a little less traditional

🌿 Green PNW Senior Photos

Best time to book: March–early May (for May-June sessions)

This is my FAVORITE time of year to do photos.

Everything is green, the temperatures are usually comfortable, we don’t have to worry about rain as much, and we don't have to worry about catching one very specific week of blossoms or fall color.

This is a great option if you want classic Pacific Northwest senior photos with trees, greenery, and that unmistakably Oregon backdrop. It’s also a great option to give you a classic backdrop so you can have tons of freedom on what to wear for your senior session.

☀️ Summer Senior Photos

Best time to book: April–early July (for July-early September sessions)

Summer is one of my favorite times for senior photos because we have warm evenings, beautiful golden light, and a little more flexibility for working around school schedules.

The one catch? Portland sunsets happen late in the summer. Like, “Wait, how is it already 9:30?” late.

Thankfully the late time isn’t usually a problem with my seniors, but if it is we have options. We can choose a location with trees that block the sun earlier, or schedule your session later in the summer when sunset starts creeping back toward a more reasonable hour. Grasses and some shrubbery does get a little dried out the longer into summer we go, but there are definitely still spots with some greenery if that’s the vibe you’re going for.

Summer is especially great for seniors who want:

  • Warm, golden light

  • Greenery and outdoor locations

  • A relaxed, summery feel

  • More flexibility around school schedules

  • A variety of outfits and locations

And if you're hoping to use your photos for graduation announcements, this can also give you plenty of time to get your photos taken, choose your favorites, and order what you need before graduation season gets hectic.

🍂 Fall Senior Photos in Portland

Best time to book: July–September (for October to early November sessions)

Fall is probably the most requested season for photos in the Portland area, and it's easy to see why.

The colors are beautiful, the light is soft, and there's something about fall that feels particularly fitting for senior photos. Maybe it's the changing leaves. Maybe it's the cozy layers. Maybe it's the fact that everyone suddenly realizes graduation is actually happening.

Whatever the reason, fall dates tend to fill quickly.

If you have your heart set on colorful fall leaves, I strongly recommend booking during the summer rather than waiting until the leaves start changing. Peak fall color can be a pretty small window, and once those dates are gone, they're gone.

Fall is perfect if you love:

  • Warm, earthy colors

  • Fall foliage

  • Cozy layers and textures

  • Classic, timeless senior photos

  • That unmistakable “senior year is really happening” feeling

So When Should You Book Your Senior Photos in Portland?

If you already know what season you want, I'd recommend booking at least a month or two ahead, and even earlier for the most popular seasons.

Fall especially tends to fill quickly, while blossom and wildflower sessions require a little more planning because we're working with such short windows.

But there's another important factor to consider: what are you using your photos for?

If you want photos for graduation announcements, senior yearbooks, party invitations, gifts, or anything else with a deadline, don't wait until the last minute. Giving yourself plenty of time means you can enjoy the process instead of realizing two weeks before graduation that you still need a photo for the announcement.

And if you're not sure what season, location, or even vibe you want, that's completely fine. You don't need to have everything figured out before you reach out. We can talk through what you're drawn to and figure out what makes the most sense for you.

So whether you're a senior trying to fit photos somewhere between school and everything else, or a parent wondering when you're supposed to make this happen, my best advice is simple:

Don't wait until senior year is already flying by.

Pick a season you love, reach out, and we'll figure out the rest.

Whenever you're ready, I'd love to help you create senior photos that actually feel like you.
